The museum's history dates back to the late 12th century when it was originally built as a fortress to protect Paris from Viking invasions. It was later converted into a royal palace, and in 1793, it was opened to the public as a museum. Today, the Louvre receives millions of visitors every year, making it one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world.
