Did you know that many catacombs used to (and maybe still do) host secret communities? Isn’t that creepy? Or is it perhaps fascinating? If you are looking for a thrilling adventure this season, vacay to the creepiest catacombs in the world!

Catacombs have been popular tourist spots for generations now and they hold the remains of over 6 million people down there, which sounds super scary but actually, these catacombs have been made safe for tourists to enjoy the fascinating and thrilling sights!

If you are a fan of thrilling adventures, visiting the catacombs should be on top of your bucket list. If you are vacaying to France or Rome, you cannot miss the amazing Catacomb tour– in fact, I am here with the best places with the scariest catacombs that you can actually visit.

The Catacombs in Paris

The most popular and the most creepy– presenting to you, the Paris catacombs! This is the one that houses the skeletons of about 6 million people. Did you know how these catacombs came into being? Back in the eighteenth century, when the cemeteries became too crowded, Parisians started burying their loved ones in these underground quarries.

Now, these catacombs are open for tourism and you can look at the remains of some of the heroes that died during the French Revolution.

The catacombs are vast, with many, many tunnels going in all directions so it is easy to get confused there. Due to that confusion, many tourists have lost their way, which sounds pretty scary but there’s a very slim chance of that as long as you follow the tour guide!

Roman Catacombs

Catacombs were originally found about 600 decades ago in the Middle East but they found their way to the Roman undergrounds. The Jewish and early Christians were not allowed to bury their loved ones within the city limits– the Romans drove them to bury their dead bodies underground, forming these fascinating catacombs.

With creepy remains of the olden Christians, these dark, creepy catacombs make up a great spot for a thrilling vacation!

Catacombs of Capuchin

Housing thousands of people’s remains, the catacombs of capuchin aka Catacombe Dei Cappuccini situated in Sicily have many preserved skeletons that give the whole place a super creepy look. If you’re visiting this place alone, you are sure to get some chills down your spine because of the dark, creepy vibes!

These catacombs are a bit different than the traditional ones in Paris– they are more of a macabre historical tourist attraction, with mummified bodies on display for the tourists to see.

Casa Rosada

Just behind the lavish presidential palace in Buenos Aires, there is a small underground tourist spot– yet another catacomb for you to see. Known as Fuerte Viejo, these catacombs aren’t as big so you don’t have to worry about getting lost inside.

Rabat Catacombs of Malta

Not so famous, but these catacombs located in Malta are definitely worth visiting. Like most others, these underground quarries were used to unnoticeably bury the pagans and Jews.

The interesting thing is the tables that are still there– were used to commemorate the ceremonious meals. You can take some amazing pictures in this creepy setting for your ‘gram and boost your followers!
